A Summer to Remember: UCSB Study Program Experience 🇺🇸

이번 여름, 2주 동안 은지가 다녀온 UCSB Summer Program은 학문적 경험과 함께 다양한 문화 체험까지 할 수 있었던 특별한 시간이었습니다. 이번 포스트를 통해 프로그램과 캠퍼스 생활, 그리고 산타바바라와 LA에서의 즐거운 추억들을 공유하고자 합니다. 👏🏻

The two-week UCSB Summer Program that Eunji joined was a truly special experience, combining academic learning with rich cultural activities. In this post, I’d like to share highlights of the program, campus life, and memorable moments in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. 👏🏻

 

University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB)는 혁신적 연구 성과와 자유로운 학풍으로 유명하며, 캘리포니아의 푸른 바다와 맞닿아 있는 아름다운 캠퍼스로 미국 내 ‘가장 아름다운 캠퍼스’ 중 하나로 꼽힙니다. 덕분에 캠퍼스에 머무는 동안 진짜 캘리포니아 라이프스타일을 경험할 수 있었습니다.

UC Santa Barbara is renowned for its groundbreaking research and free-spirited academic culture. With its stunning location along the California coast, it is often regarded as one of the most beautiful campuses in the world. Staying on campus offered us the chance to truly experience the California lifestyle.

 

매일 UCSB 캠퍼스에서 강의를 듣고 팀원들과 토론하며 비즈니스 아이디어를 발전시켰습니다.
캠퍼스 투어와 오리엔테이션도 있어 학교 생활을 자연스럽게 체험 및 적응할 수 있었고, 교내 시설과 레스토랑을 이용하면서 현지 학생들의 일상도 가까이 느낄 수 있었습니다. 특히, Media and Art Technology 전공의 AlloSphere Lab에 방문해 최첨단 시각·청각 몰입형 공간을 직접 체험할 수 있었는데 과학, 예술, 공학이 결합된 혁신적인 연구 환경을 엿볼 수 있는 특별한 경험이었습니다. 직접 랩 체험을 안내해주신 JoAnn Kuchera-Morin 교수님께서 한국인 포닥 연구원이 그날 학교를 나오지 않아 너무 아쉽다고 하시며, 재치 있는 말씀으로 현장을 한층 더 즐겁게 만들어주셨습니다.

Every day, we attended lectures at UCSB and engaged in discussions with our teammates to develop business ideas. The campus tour and orientation helped us adapt smoothly to campus life, and using the university facilities and restaurants gave us a closer look at the daily lives of local students. A highlight was visiting the AlloSphere Lab in the Media and Art Technology program, where we experienced an advanced immersive audiovisual environment that showcased the innovative fusion of science, art, and engineering. Professor JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, who guided us through the lab, added a lighthearted touch by joking that it was unfortunate the Korean postdoctoral researcher wasn’t on campus that day. 

 

이번 프로그램은 Managing Innovation & Smart Product Development라는 주제로 2주간 진행되었습니다.
신제품(서비스) 개발 과정과 시장에서 실제로 통할 수 있는 비즈니스 모델을 배우며, 강의와 워크숍 등을 통해 이론과 실무를 함께 접할 수 있었습니다.

This two-week summer program, Managing Innovation & Smart Product Development, focused on new product (and service) development and market-tested business models. Through lectures and workshops, we were able to combine academic theories with practical applications.

 

수업이 끝난 이후 저녁 시간에는 자유롭게 시간을 보낼 수 있었습니다. 해변을 산책하거나 산타바바라 시내를 둘러보며 여유로운
분위기를 즐겼습니다. 각자 관심사에 맞게 소소한 액티비티를 찾아다니는 재미도 쏠쏠했습니다!
또, 기숙사에서 함께 음식을 만들어 먹거나 저녁을 사와 나눠 먹을 때마다 정말 즐거웠습니다.

After classes, we had plenty of free time in the evenings. We often walked along the beach or explored downtown Santa Barbara, soaking in its relaxed atmosphere. Everyone also enjoyed finding small activities that matched their own interests. Some of the most fun moments came from cooking meals together in the dorm or sharing dinners we brought back.

 

‘American Riviera’라 불리는 산타바바라는 도시 자체가 하나의 매력이었습니다. 프로그램 일정에는 시티 투어와 푸드 투어가
포함되어 있었는데 스페인식 건축, 멋진 자연과 날씨 그리고 산타바바라의 다양한 음식 덕분에 잊지 못할 경험이 되었습니다. 

Known as the “American Riviera,” Santa Barbara itself was a true highlight. The program included a city tour and a food tour, where we experienced Spanish-style architecture, breathtaking natural scenery, and a variety of local cuisine. These activities made for unforgettable memories.

 

 

주말에는 로스앤젤레스로 여행을 떠났습니다. 헐리우드 거리, 다운타운, 산타모니카 해변, 미술관 등 캘리포니아의 다채로운 모습을
직접 보고 느낄 수 있었습니다. 해외에서 먹을 때 가장 맛있는 BCD 순두부도 빼놓지 않고 즐겼습니다!

On the weekend, we traveled to Los Angeles. From Hollywood Boulevard and downtown to beaches and art museums, we got to experience the diverse charms of California. And of course, we didn’t miss out on enjoying BCD Tofu House, which always tastes even better abroad!

 

2주 동안 정말 즐겁고 뜻깊은 시간을 보낼 수 있었고, 다양한 전공의 대학원생들과 교류하며 새로운 시각도 얻을 수 있었습니다!
이번 경험을 통해 연구 아이디어를 다른 각도에서도 떠올려 볼 수 있게 되었으며 다가오는 새 학기를 더욱 열심히 보내야겠다는
동기부여가 되었습니다. 🥹

I had a truly enjoyable and meaningful two weeks, during which I gained new perspectives through交流with graduate students from diverse fields. This experience allowed me to approach my research ideas from fresh angles and gave me strong motivation to work even harder in the upcoming semester. 🥹
