On November 5, I visited Dior Seongsu with members of our lab as part of a field trip for our Luxury Cost Analysis class. Dior Seongsu opened on May 1, 2022, the day after Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior Fall 2022 fashion show was held in Seoul on April 30, to commemorate the event. The show, held on the campus of Ewha Womans University, was the first Dior fashion show ever held in Korea. Although the store was originally planned to operate only temporarily, it has since become a landmark that people make a point of stopping by to take photos when visiting Seongsu-dong.

At the time of our visit, Dior Seongsu was decorated for the holiday season with Christmas trees and nutcracker figures, filling every corner of the store with a festive atmosphere. Nutcracker figures were even placed among the products on the shelves of the product zones, highlighting Dior’s visual merchandising, which carried the seasonal theme consistently throughout the entire space.

On this day, a Dior staff member personally guided us through the store, explaining each space and its products. Our first stop was the Iconic Zone, which brings together Dior’s signature pieces, such as the Lady Dior bag. The Iconic Zone also featured new pieces introduced by Dior’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson, and the one that stood out most was the MΓ©daillon Flap Bag, with its round medallion-embellished clasp. The walls were finished in velvet and adorned with Toile de Jouy, one of Dior’s signature patterns.

Next, we moved to a zone dedicated to smaller items such as card holders, sunglasses, micro bags, and bag charms. What struck me was that these items are more accessible in price than the main handbags, serving as an entry point for customers experiencing Dior for the first time. Jewelry was also displayed in the glass showcase beneath the shelves, allowing us to browse small leather goods and accessories together in a single space.

In the men’s zone, which we explored next, we saw Jonathan Anderson’s spring collection; set against the garden visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows, it conveyed the elegance and calm of a French garden. Alongside a wide range of items, including knitwear, outerwear, jersey, tailoring, and denim, the zone also displayed the Dior Ribbon sneakers, a modern reinterpretation of the classic sneaker, and the staff member explained that personalized styling is available, as well as “synergy looks” that pair women’s and men’s pieces together.

We then visited the women’s shoe zone, where a wide variety of women’s shoes, including slingbacks, pumps, sandals, and boots, were displayed in one place. Unlike the velvet wallpaper we had seen earlier, the walls in this space were finished with hanji, a traditional Korean paper. By rendering the Toile de Jouy motif on traditional hanji, Dior Seongsu weaves Korean craftsmanship into its space, and I was especially impressed by how the French House’s iconic pattern was expressed through a distinctly Korean material.

Throughout our tour, the staff member enthusiastically walked us through the concept of each space, as well as the design intentions, materials, and details behind each product. Thanks to this, we were able to go beyond simply looking at products and experience firsthand how Dior conveys its brand heritage and craftsmanship to its customers.

The next space was dedicated to the Lady Dior bag, Dior’s signature icon, with an entire wall lined with Lady Dior bags in a wide range of colors and materials. This space also showcased bags from the Dior Lady Art (DLA) collection, in which artists reinterpret the Lady Dior bag through their own unique perspectives. Among them were works created by Korean artists.

In the Lady Dior zone, the staff member took bag charms out of the display case one by one and demonstrated them for us. The drawers held a neat arrangement of metal charms in various colors, charms shaped like flowers, bees, and ladybugs, and chain key rings. I found it interesting that customers can choose their favorite charms to attach to their bags, allowing them to personalize even the same Lady Dior bag to reflect their own taste and style.

After touring the store, we stopped by CafΓ© Dior inside Dior Seongsu to take a short break. The large LED screen behind the cafΓ© displayed scenes of the villa and garden in Granville, France, where Monsieur Dior spent his childhood, allowing us to naturally experience Dior’s brand heritage even while enjoying our coffee.

I would like to sincerely thank our professor for giving us the opportunity to have such a valuable experience at Dior Seongsu through this field trip. Since we are currently learning in the RECB seminar about how retail space experiences and store environments influence consumer behavior, I was able to see the concepts from class come to life in an actual luxury store. Experiencing the store’s space and service firsthand taught me so much, and it was a truly insightful and rewarding time!
